Our Water, Our Future

A long-term plan to address aging infrastructure and protect the City’s drinking water system.

The City of Oak Park Heights is committed to delivering essential public services that support daily life, public health, and community stability. Providing safe, reliable drinking water is one of the City’s most important responsibilities.

Why Are We Reinvesting Now?

After decades of use, critical infrastructure is aging and some components are nearing the end of their useful life. In addition, trace levels of PFAS — often called, “forever chemicals”— have been identified in the City’s water supply.

A Long-Term Improvement Plan

The City has developed a $41 million investment plan for the water system, which includes upgrades to watermains and water towers along with the construction of a PFAS removal water treatment facility. The goal is to provide safe, reliable drinking water for residents now and for many years to come.

How the Plan Would Be Funded

The City has secured multiple funding sources to support initial planning but needs additional funding options or sources for construction. That is why the City is seeking legislative approval to place a half-cent local sales tax before voters in 2026. A local sales tax allows costs to be shared with visitors who make purchases in Oak Park Heights, rather than relying solely on local households.
